LESSONS
At Mill Creek Equestrian Center our goal is to create conscientious
safe riders. We teach English riding lessons to all levels of riders. We
encourage students to start off in private lessons so an instructor can
place them into an appropriate group lesson when they are ready. Our
group lessons usually have five to ten riders and meet weekly.
Most of our group lessons comprise ½ flat work and ½ jumping. We have a few
groups that are dressage only (no jumping). Students may also schedule
private or semi-private lessons in either jumping or dressage.
Lessons are available Tuesday through Sunday; we are closed on Mondays
and specified holidays. For
the competitive rider we specialize in Combined Training and Dressage
and attend most of the Horse Trials in Area VI (California) as well as
many of the local dressage shows. Several times a year our competitive
riders have the opportunity to go out and school at some of the
facilities where we compete. Visit our
Prices/Class Schedules page for the most current lesson prices and
group lessons schedule. Check our Policies
page for information on appropriate riding attire, general safety rules,
etc. CHILDREN’S DAY CAMP
Perhaps the most unique component of our curriculum is the Children’s
Day Camp, which we offer on Saturdays and Sundays during the school year
and daily during summer vacation. In addition to fundamental riding
skills, students learn safe handling procedures, proper grooming
techniques and correct use and care of riding equipment. We foster a
sense of responsibility and love for horses by emphasizing the
importance of respect and appropriate care for them. Visit our
Children's Day Camp page for complete
information.
UCLA RECREATION RIDING PROGRAM
Mill Creek has been
working through UCLA Recreation since 1988 to provide a program similar
to Day Camp for the UCLA community. The seven week courses are
taught year round. The cost is $180 for for seven one hour riding
lessons and seven half hour sessions on horse care. All
participants must wear hard-soled shoes (visit our
Policies page for additional information on
riding attire and our Resources page for
information on where to purchase it).
We offer
these lessons to all levels of riders as follows:
-
Beginning - No experience necessary (class normally offered Sunday
mornings).
-
Advanced Beginning - Riders are comfortable at the walk, trot and
canter and know diagonals (class normally offered Wednesday evenings).
-
Intermediate - Riders refine their position, learn to ride a
jumping course and begin dressage (classes to be arranged--at this
level riders can fit into our regular group lessons).
-
Advanced - Riders continue to work on dressage and stadium jumping
(classes to be arranged--at this level riders can fit into our regular
group lessons).
Scheduling and enrollment information is
available through the
UCLA Recreation web page.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Mill Creek has been involved with
important
community based projects, such as “Horses in the Hood,” whose mission is
to teach inner city children about riding and caring for horses. Cory
Walkey has made Mill Creek's horses and facilities available to this
valuable program on a number of occasions. Many of these children
see the ocean and drive into the mountains for the very first time on
their trip to Mill Creek. In addition to learning riding basics, Mill
Creek schedules lectures by various horse care professionals, such as
veterinarians and horse shoers. (Visit our
Horses in the Hood "mini" Web site.)
Mill
Creek has also developed an elective physical education class for
students attending neighboring Calmont School.
