Karen started riding in Cape Town, South Africa. As a child rider (13yrs and under) she made the Regional Children’s Teams for Showing, Eventing, Equitation and Show Jumping. She placed 3rd and 5th in the South African Children’s Eventing Championships. Once she moved into the Junior classes (14-18yrs), she brought on an extraordinarily talented OTTB, and decided to focus solely on Show Jumping, competing in her first 1.40m class at 14 yrs. Junior career highlights include winning the South African (SA) Junior Outdoor Grand Prix (1.40m) two consecutive years, winning the SA Junior Show Jumping Title and getting her South African Show Jumping Colors representing South Africa against England, Scotland and Wales. She was the No. 1 ranked junior rider for 3 consecutive years. At 18, Karen moved into the 1.50/1.60m adult classes. Career highlights include winning the SA Adult Show Jumping Championships (being the only person to have won both Junior and Adult titles on the same horse), winning the overall FEI World Cup Series in South Africa and qualifying for the World Cup Finals in Leipzig, Germany in 2001/2002. Karen has also ridden for different breeders of Belgian and Dutch Warmbloods, as well as private clients to bring on their horses for sale, while also teaching.
Karen joined Mill Creek in May 2016. She has an upbeat, can-do attitude. Due to her broad experience and learning from wonderful trainers along the way, she has a large arsenal of training exercises and techniques, which she looks forward to sharing with Mill Creek riders. There is always more to learn with horses, and she makes a point of studying other riders and learning new techniques in order to continually provide her students with the best training possible.
