Karene Cohen

Karene Cohen and AmosKarene Cohen is a wonderful trainer and a great asset at Mill Creek. She has been teaching riding for 28 years. She originally worked at Mill Creek and ran the Riding School program from 1982-1998. She returned to Mill Creek in early 2010 to teach camps and private lessons on the weekends. Karene is an excellent rider and was the Area VI Preliminary Champion in 2006.

Karene started riding with Cory at Los Rancheros at the age of 6. When Cory bought the land in Topanga and built Mill Creek, Karene followed Cory and rode at Mill Creek from 1972-1999. She has always been an event rider. Her first horse was named The Medicine Man, also known as Doc. He was a great horse who taught Karene a lot about riding and she competed with him in many shows at the novice through training levels.

Karene attended Calabasas High School and then received a degree in Animal Husbandry from Pierce College in 1982. She is married to the “boy next door,” whom she has known for a very long time. They now live in Buellton with 3 horses, 3 dogs, 4 cats, 5 rabbits, 4 hens and 2 pet birds!!!

Karene loves teaching and is a very encouraging to her young riders. Her favorite piece of advice is: “Even if you are not the best in your group today, keep working at it - you will be one day. Never give up if you love riding. To be good at this sport you have to pay some dues.”

Karene’s hobbies include backpacking and volunteering for the Los Padres National Forest. When asked about her other profession, Karene responded “Nothing else, this is what I do!” We are honored to have her back home at Mill Creek!
